Scholarships for single moms: How to find and apply

The Anika Marie Hoybjerg Scholarship is one of many scholarships that are part of the Combined College of Education Scholarship Application. The award should be split between the Fall and Spring semesters (Annual Award) and awarded to a COE major. Preference is given to single parents who demonstrate financial need. One award is to be made until funding reaches a level to provide one full tuition scholarship.

The Bruce and Marjorie Sundlun Scholarship will be awarded to students in college-level or certificate-level. Applicants must be single parents. Preference will be given to parents currently or previously receiving state aid or those who have been previously incarcerated. Past recipients are eligible to reapply. The Nondas Hurst Voll Scholarship Fund will be awarded to single mothers seeking to transition off public assistance. Applicants must be pursuing higher education or job training beyond high school in the college or certificate level. The Dr. Mary Ursits Student Assistance Scholarship is available to a single-parent undergraduate student or a child of a single parent actively pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education(P-5) or a B-K Traditional program.

The Kathi Joy Wiley Scholarship has a strong interest in supporting the most marginalized populations of students that are pursuing any post-secondary education pathway, including all the following: degrees, certificates, proficiencies, or hands-on career skill building. Career pursuits can be anything from Pre-Medicine or Welder, to Certified Truck Driver, or Tattoo Artist, and the list of career pursuits is endless. Applicants must be residents of southwest Washington who are or have been affected by any of, but not limited to, the following circumstances: being a single parent or a widow; being a foster youth or young adult who have aged out of the foster care system (formal or informal); incarceration of self or parents; being an immigrant or refugee, or second-generation immigrant or refugee; living in poverty; have experienced instability in housing and/or being unhoused; living with a disability (developmental, intellectual neurodivergent, physical) or have behavioral issues; recovery from addiction or affected by addiction; identify as LGBTQ2S+; and being a survivor of domestic violence, gender violence, and/or child abuse. The Toby Hopper Endowed Scholarship for Single Mothers is open to single, non-traditional female students, who provide major financial support to their custodial children and are pursuing a degree in teacher education.

The Anne C. Kaplan Endowed Fund provides financial assistance to the Shirley Nelson Campus Child Care Center to discount the cost of childcare for NIU students, faculty, or staff, with preference given to single parents and employees whose retention would be enhanced by assistance with childcare support. The fund also provides support for students serving postgraduate internships in partner institutions in DeKalb County. The Susan Schulman Begley Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to those who must identify as a woman, who is establishing herself as a head of household and a single parent, and due to extreme circumstances, following the dissolution of an abusive or emotionally traumatic relationship, has no other adequate financial means, and requires funds to meet immediate needs for herself and her children, including rent and food. The Salix Gastrointestinal Health Scholars Award will be awarded to those who, at the time of application, have applied to, have been accepted to, or are currently attending an accredited college, university, or advanced (post-high school) vocational or technical school for academic year 2024-2025. Applicants must have been diagnosed with and treated for a gastrointestinal condition and have been treated by a licensed healthcare provider. Two letters of recommendation and information about the applicant's school and community activities must be submitted. Signed 2024 Medical Statement Form confirming the applicant's gastrointestinal condition is also required. Four awards are available to undergraduate students; four awards are available to graduate students; one award is available to working parent pursuing undergraduate, vocational or technical, or graduate degrees; and one award is available to single parent pursuing undergraduate, vocational or technical, or graduate degrees.
